J.J. GUTHRIE AWARDS
The Annual JJ Guthrie Award is for the Best and
Fairest first grade player each season. Three
independent observers each rate the best and fairest
three players during every first grade game, with
three points given to the most deserving player, two
to the second, and one point for the
remaining player.
The votes are placed in sealed envelopes and kept in
the club safe until the JJ Guthrie Award night after
the end of competition. During the night the envelopes
are opened and the votes publicly counted. The player
who gains the most votes overall wins the JJ Guthrie
Award for the year. To qualify, players must be
financial members and not have been sent off during
the season.
The Award honours the memory of former club member
John J. Guthrie who died of cancer in 1989.

2008
Lock Brent Murphy won the 2008 JJ Guthrie Award for First Grade Best and Fairest at the clubrooms on Friday night 5 September after a year of outstanding performance in the premiers' engine room, making a major contribution to the competition's strongest pack. His efforts were rewarded when he was selected to tour Britain with the Western Force and played in some of the toughest matches against top professionals. In the JJ Guthrie, Brent came in ahead of last year's winner, halfback Curtis McLean, newcomer wing Nathan Hunt, and big brother prop Ash Murphy.

Halfback Curtis McLean was the deserving winner of Perth-Bayswater's annual first grade best and fairest award, the J.J.Guthrie Trophy, in the awards ceremony at the clubrooms tonight. Japanese fullback Matsushita Kaoru led the count on 36 points at the half way stage, but was overtaken by McLean into the second half of the year. Late addition to the team, flyhalf Ruki Tipuna, accumulated big points in the later stages but couldn't catch his halfback who finished on 42 points to win the trophy. Locks Brent Murphy and Jock Stanley, and flankers Cameron Stoneley and Gareth Cherrington, were the other outstanding performers recognised in the countdown.

2006
Hard-hitting veteran Perth-Bayswater blindside flanker
Eugene Maxwell capped a stellar season for the men in black with a
clean sweep of the club's senior awards, including the prestigious JJ
Guthrie award for the club's best player. The early flier for the season
was Japanese import Yusuke Nakagaki, in the middle of the polling, Jock Stanley and Murphy brothers Brent
and Mike looked likely candidates for the prize, but Maxwell's
late-season form was too good as he stormed home. A deserving winner, Maxwell was a talisman for the forward pack all
season and his bone-crunching tackles unsettled the opposition and
rallied Perth-Bayswater morale.

Elusive-running winger and fullback Dylan Davies was the
winner of the JJ Guthrie Award for Perth-Bayswater’s fairest
and best player at an award night held at the clubrooms on Friday,
August 19. It was soon apparent that Davies would collect the award as
he polled particularly well in the early rounds but continued to win
votes throughout the season.
Although Davies was the clear winner with 48 points, 20 ahead of
second-placed Eugene Maxwell, just seven points separated the next five
places.

sharing the honours. A special mention must go to 2002 winner, Kyle
Sproule, who accumulated 19 points halfway through the season before
joining Reserve Grade.

1998
Conrad Kovacs won the 1998 J.J.Guthrie Award. He again
opened up a sizeable lead in the early stages and never looked like
being caught. Lock Mathew "Weta" Robertson again gave him stiff
competition, particularly in the later rounds, but for a record third
time it was the local boy who came home to collect the trophy. Conrad
paid tribute to the unsung heroes of the team who did the hard work
each week which may not be readily obvious from the sideline when Best
and Fairest points were alotted.
