SUN SHINES FOR PERTH-BAYSWATER
6 April 2008

The early morning downpour cleared in the afternoon allowing Perth-Bayswater to notch up their first win of the new season as reigning premiers with a 24-12 victory over Cottesloe at Harvey Field. As coach John Taylor tinkers with his side in the opening few games there was a new starting team from the week before.

There was a big improvement from last week noticeably in the lineouts with locks Brent Murphy and Jock Stanley having a field day with the opposition ball. Scrums were much improved albeit against a weaker opposition pack than the previous week.

The first half saw several missed chances most noticeably winger Nathan Hunt collecting the ball past the try line and running over the dead ball line while trying to come around closer to the posts. This was the only black mark on his performance for the day with several darting runs and decisive ball returns.

Making his premier grade debut, Nick Dury had a very impressive game at openside flanker, a constant nuisance for the opposition pilfering ball and was in the right place at the right time to cross the line for a try.

With the game in closely in the balance coming out of half time Coach JT sent new boy Reuben Potaka on to the blindside and his first touch brought about Perth's third try for the day. Usual goal kicking lock Jock Stanley forgot to bring his kicking boots to Harvey Field, instead bringing boxing gloves, while in the sin bin kicking duties went to Scott Fardy. His first attempt for the day clattering off the left hand post. His second effort — seemingly a much harder shot from close to the sideline went over to make it 24-12.

Man of the match for the game was Aleema Arthur, who had a very eventful day. Spending ten minutes in the bin in the first half, then late in the game turning from sinner to saint scoring the bonus point try.

In other grades, Second Grade were pipped at the post 22-15, Thirds went down 33-0, Filthy Fifths won 17-12, and U20's were victorious 26-17. Also U18's scraped in 106-0 (this is not a typo).
