President Noel Spittal
Dear Perth Bayswater RUFC Members,
Late last week, after repeated requests from various club members over the last six months, I finally put my hand up to fill the vacant role of President of the club.
It’s a role that I accept with pride and the promise to be accessible to all club members. The role of President was vacated by Jack Seymour at the last AGM in November 2010 and no one stepped forward to take up the mantle. Jack has had to fill the role since November as Senior Vice President and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Jack for holding the club together over the last few months. I’m fortunate to have Jack as my Vice President (Rugby Operations) for 2011 as his experience and knowledge will be critical to our success on and off the field this season. I’m also privileged to have Carol van Malsen as my Vice President (Administration) for 2011 and Carol’s professional approach to this role is much appreciated.
We have a strong committee on board for 2011 that is very experienced and hard working. To have a committee that includes four life members and two former presidents demonstrates what depth we have and it will be an honor to lead such a talented team.
The club is also fortunate to have good coaching and management teams in place for 2011. Our performances in the opening rounds of 2011 show that we are on the right track for a successful season. It’s with great satisfaction that I have watched the senior teams play and see all the home grown players filling positions in our first and second grade sides. The policy of developing our juniors, Under 18s and Under 20s into seniors through the introduction of an academy in 06/07 has started to bear fruit for all to see. The continuing work in this area is also very noticeable in the performances of our Under 18s and Under 20sin 2011 as well. The addition to our family of some quality players from outside WA has also strengthened our playing stocks for 2011. With the Women’s team looking strong again and the fourth grade supporting the bar with a bit of rugby thrown in to work up a thirst, along with the club's golden oldies side Wanderers, it’s an exciting time to be part of Perth Bayswater RUFC in 2011.
Our juniors are also looking strong this year. Chairman of The Juniors, Mark Mckay, again has the junior committee hard at work and things are on track for the start of their season on 7 May. Teams will be appearing in new jumpers this season kindly sponsored by Suncorp Bank.
I’d like to also take this opportunity to provide a bit of background about myself to those members of the club that don’t know me. I’m married with three girls, and a boy who plays for our juniors. I’m employed as a manager for Electrical Distributors of WA, who are one of our main sponsors. I joined the club at the start of 1986 and have been an active member since. I have played all grades from first grade down to fourths/fifths, plus golden oldies for the club. I still front for the fourth grade and am a member of the Wanderers golden oldies side. I have managed the first, second and fifth grade over the years plus coached a number of junior sides including the fifth grade.
On the club management side off things I’ve held various committee roles over the years with the highlights being Vice President when we won our last premiership in 2007 and also Chairman of the Juniors in 07/08. I’m currently Vice president of the WAJRU and have served on the WAJRU executive committee for the last two seasons.
In 2008 I was honored by the club with Life Membership.
Hopefully I will get around and speak to as many people as I can in the coming weeks. I’d like to thank the members for giving me the opportunity to fill the role of President and look forward to serving in the role.
