First grade possessed a talented backline but struggled to win possession. The team lacked direction in the first half of the season, but with the return of coach George Price mid-way through the year, the team found new confidence and defeated three of the four eventual semi-finalists. First grade came within a few percentage points of making the finals and on their second-round performance certainly deserved a shot at the title.
