How does that feel Neddies?

No wonder Perth-Bayswater's 1994 first grade team were in a celebratory mood -- this photo was taken just after they knocked off Nedlands for the first time in more years than we care to admit.

1994
FIRST GRADE

First round: Kalamunda 7-21, University 10-22, Nedlands 5-60, Associates 15-9, Cottesloe 8-20, Western Suburbs 18-8, Palmyra 17-12, Rockingham 20-5, ARKs 19-19.

Second round: Kalamunda 16-18, University 16-9, Nedlands 25-21, Associates 9-6, Cottesloe 18-11, Western Suburbs 21-12, Palmyra, Rockingham, ARKs.

Summary: Fifth in competition. A slow start to the year with many new players and a new coach saw First Grade lagging in the bottom of the competition. Ron Rae's First Grade fought their way back with some good wins including the first defeat of Nedlands in 14 years. But it was too late and they fell one spot short of the finals.

SECOND GRADE

First round: Kalamunda loss, University 15-8, Nedlands loss, Associates loss, Cottesloe, Western Suburbs 16-13, Palmyra 11-3, Rockingham 47-0, ARKs 28-21.

Second round: Kalamunda 11-18, University 27-8, Nedlands 12-20, Associates 42-10, Cottesloe 10-36, Western Suburbs 29-7, Palmyra, Rockingham, ARKs.

Summary: Fifth in competition. Seconds also had a confused start to the season, losing coach Charlie Amai to be replaced by Bill Watt. Some early losses were regathered in the second round and Seconds lost a final spot on percentage.

THIRD GRADE

Due to a chronic shortage of players, Perth-Bayswater dropped third grade for 1994.

FOURTH GRADE

First round: Kalamunda 7-77, Murdoch 0-25, Nedlands loss, Associates loss, Cottesloe 3-15, Curtin 3-18, Palmyra 20-0, Leeming 38-18, Wanneroo 22-5.

Second round: Kalamunda 29-0, Murdoch 37-0, Nedlands 13-7, Associates 19-11, Cottesloe 13-65, Curtin 0-28, Palmyra, Leeming, Wanneroo.

Summary: Fifth in competition. Andy Keen's fourth grade had a horror start to the season as the club struggled to find a third grade, and then hit a purple patch to win ten games straight. They couldn't quite regain enough ground and finished fifth.

FIFTH GRADE

First round: Kalamunda 0-25, University 22-10, Nedlands 10-12, Associates 26-7, Bunbury, Curtin 11-23, Palmyra 18-5, Rockingham 34-0, ARKs 0-10.

Second round: Kalamunda 10-18, University 38-3, Nedlands 31-7, Associates 6-17, Bunbury 0-25, Western Suburbs 0-38.

Summary: Ninth in competition. Ferocious fifths, again under the peerless Peter Westaway, stumbled from disaster to catastrophe during their confusing season to finish second last. But nobody minded because drowning your sorrows is almost as good an excuse to drink the bar dry as celebrating a triumph.

COLTS

First round: Curtin, University 0-0, Nedlands, Asscoiates, Cottesloe, Western Suburbs 0-26, Wanneroo 5-19, Palmyra, ARKs 10-10.

Second round: Curtin 26-43, University 25-0, Nedlands 0-44, Associates 0-67, Cottesloe 0-25, Western Suburbs 0-87, Palmyra, Wanneroo, ARKs.

Summary: Eighth in competition. The fragile depth of colts was exposed this year after being grand finalists the year before. The club struggled to find a colts side all year, forfeited a string of games, fielded short sides and played juniors in the team -- yet somehow managed to avoid the wooden spoon.
