SUMMARY 1998 |
FIRST GRADESeventh in Competition. First grade again lost players over the off season, resulting in a tough season for Perth-Bayswater, premiers in 1996 and grand finalists in 1997, in which they plunged to embarrassing losses but rose to a couple of impressive wins and one draw with previously unbeaten reigning premiers, Associates. Steve Ngamanu's first grade lost six of their games by seven points or less and could so easily have produced to a very different season. |
SECOND GRADESixth in Competition. First grade's losses resulted in a lack of depth in the lower grades, and second grade failed to realise its potential in 1998. Frank Tito's second grade held a spot in the top four at times in the season but fell away at the end of the season to finish sixth. |
THIRD GRADEFifth in Competition. Pat McLoughlin's third grade was the best performed side in the club for most of the year and narrowly missed the finals when it lost the final game of the season to Nedlands after a season of mostly consistent games with limited firepower. |
FOURTH GRADENinth in Competition. Perth-Bayswater didn't really have enough players to field a fourth grade in 1998, and Barry Guzder struggled throughout the year to cobble together sides out of transients, spares and fifth and third grade players who had already played. |
FIFTH GRADESeventh in Competition. Fabulous Fifths, under the inspired leadership of Cliff Richard, carried on a proud tradition of playing just enough rugby to constitute an excuse for prolonged periods at the bar. They won a few games along the way but never attempted to contest the ambitions of sides like Nedlands, packed with former star first graders, who took this grade far too seriously for their own good. |
COLTSTenth and Dead Last in Competition. Full marks to Bob Whitney for battling the odds all year to persuade lazy young layabouts to make a go of this grade. Pathetic training turnouts and the backbone of Australia's finest jellyfish ensured lousy results and a string of forfeits. It were different when I were lad etc. |
