SUMMARY 2000
FIRST GRADE Another disappointing year from first grade despite some promising moments, finishing eighth in a ten team competition. The team lacked key players and lost their way at vital times, but a core of promising young players is developing and with some positive recruitment in the off season in a few essential positions the potential is there for big things in 2001. Under coach Jamie Hohapata the team rose to the heights of beating grand finalists Kalamunda at the start of the second round and held premiers Nedlands to 10-0 a few weeks later. But the team had trouble maintaining their attitude, losing to ARKs and struggling to beat lowly Rockingham. Thanks to Jamie, managers Graeme Grumpy McCall and Grant Grunter Hutson, and physios Loretta Stephenson and Andrew Burne. Points for: 197 Points against: 382 8th in competition.
SECOND GRADE Second Grade Seconds again led the way for Perth-Bayswater in 2000 with another finals appearance after a solid season of close but determined wins. Coach Dave Proctor joined the club from New Zealand this year and was ably assisted throughout by Craig Barrett. The team had only one loss in the first round, to eventual premiers Nedlands, but had an ordinary second round with five losses. They played a defensive game in their semi-final against Cottesloe, losing by a narrow 11-9, with three penalty kicks to Craig Barrett. Second grade are to be commended for their results this season, with thanks and congratulations to Dave, Craig, and manager the ever-present Bob Whitney. Points for: 537 Points against: 222 3rd in competition Semi-finalists
THIRD GRADE Third grade enjoyed a season of mixed success in 2000, with some good wins and some close and unlucky losses that left them one spot short of the finals at the end of the season. They enjoyed a good first round with only one big loss, against Nedlands, but two close losses and two draws spoiled what could have been a very worthy round. They dropped back a gear to suffer five losses in the second round and finish a couple of games out of the top four. Along the way coach Barry Guzder's team led the club in attitude and team spirit, and ably supported the higher grades throughout. Thanks to Bazz and manager Hine Black for a creditable year with Thirsty Thirds. Points for: 327 Points against: 274 5th in competition
FOURTH GRADE John Reti's fourth grade started the season with a makeshift team but John quickly gathered the core of a talented team that made rapid progress in the reduced WARU fourth grade competition. With only a loss and two draws against them, Fourths were well placed for the finals at the end of the first round. But like most of the club's teams, they struggled in the second half of the competition, recording four losses and a draw. Their early position stood them in good stead and they made it into the finals in a healthy third spot but lost their semi-final against fourth-placed Palmyra, 40-12. Congratulations and thanks to coach John Reti and Manager Paul Antipas for another strong year with fourth grade. Points for: 386 Points against: 247 3rd in competition semi-finalists
FIFTH GRADE Fabulous Fifths, under the inspired leadership of Mike Jones, assumed their customary position of the club's leading team and quickly established themselves as the team to beat in the fifth grade competition. They suffered two defeats in the first round but it was all part of Jonesy's master plan as they stormed through the second round with only one defeat — a one-point loss to the gods and legends of Nedlands, to lull them in to a false sense of security. The semi-final was won in dazzling style over Neddies, 27-10 but the team had peaked a game too soon, losing the Grand Final to Neddies 15-9. Congratulations to Mike Jones and the boys for yet another year of outstanding drinking. Points for: 383 Points against: 163 2nd in competition Grand Finalist
COLTS Darrel Taylor's colts team were looking for big things after last year's semi-final but the loss of some players from the team and of others up the grades led to a continuing struggle throughout the year to maintain numbers and attitude. They enjoyed a creditable first round with four losses, two of them very close. They seemed to hit form in the second round with five wins on the trot but lost their last three games, and suffered a very unfair penalty from WARU for inadvertantly fielding an overage player, to finish well down the very even colts competition table. The colts competition was again a total shambles with an uneven number of byes, and some teams penalised for overage players while others were not. Thanks to Darrel Taylor and manager Ray Goodall for a sterling job in less than perfect circumstances. Points for: 198 Points against: 254 8th in competition
