SUMMARY 2001
FIRST GRADE Coach: Jamie Hohapata Managers: Grant Hutson and Graeme McCall FIRST GRADE had a frustrating year with a young team which showed plenty of talent and with some experience in key positions could have achieved so much more. They finished a disappointing eighth out of ten for the year but that does not tell the real story. Although they won only four games during the season they suffered a number of close losses against the best opposition and gave a good account of themselves on the field even in those few games where they conceded large scores. In four games they gained bonus points for being within 7 points and with an ounce of luck could so easily have won all four — including premiership favourites Nedlands. The club’s aim over the off season is to keep most of this young team together to build on the foundations of 2001 and together with some careful recruiting in a couple of areas, forge a team that will not only win the close ones but some of the others as well. Thanks to coach Jamie Hohapata, now departed for Singapore, and to the gun management team of Grunter and Grumpy (they’re not pretty but they’re effective), and to all the team for a hard but worthwhile season. We know you won a lot more battles out there on the paddock than history’s scoreboard will record, and we believe the best is yet to come. Points for: 197 Points against: 382 8th in competition.
SECOND GRADE Coaches: Darren Pomare and Andy Keen Manager: Bob Whitney Second grade had a reasonably good first round with only three losses in the middle but as numbers fell and players were lost, they dropped away slightly in the second round to lose five of the nine games, and finish one spot short of the finals. Another competitive season from seconds in the difficult circumstances faced by all grades this year. Fifth in competition. Points for - 304 Points against - 260
THIRD GRADE Coach: Barry Guzder Manager: Hine Black Thirds suffered throughout the season from the player shortage that gripped the club this year, and often fielded scratch combinations at very short notice. They struggled in the first round, winning four of their nine games but showed great character to come home strongly to win six of the last seven games of the season and narrowly fail to make the finals in the final game of the season. Fifth in competition Points for - 373 Points against - 272
FOURTH GRADE Coach: Mike Te Aute Manager: Michele Mathews The club didn’t really have a fourth grade this year and only just fielded a team towards the end of the season, forfeiting some away games. Full marks to coach Mike Te Aute for his untiring efforts to keep it going. Seventh in competition Points for - 228 Points against - 556
FIFTH GRADE Coach: Mike Jones Reams could be written about Fabulous Fifths’ triumphant year as minor premiers and finalists but suffice it to say that Jonesy’s cunning mixture of extreme training and severe alcoholism brought the best out of this elite group of athletes losing only two games in the competition before bowing out in the preliminary final. A great year for Jonesy and the team. Minor premiers, finalists. Points for - 449 Points against - 157
