SUMMARY 2002
FIRST GRADE Coach: Allan Hill Assistant Coaches: Bruce Mathiesen and Sam McCourt Manager: Arnie FIRST GRADE had another irritating year where a young, talented team came close to hitting their straps but lacked the killer punch to seize those close games. They had an ordinary first round, beating Rockingham and University and scoring a good win over Kalamunda. They came within 7 points of Palmyra but were well off the pace against the top half of the competition. In the second round they were only two points adrift of Palmyra and only a late penalty goal to Nedlands prevented First Grade from taking that prize scalp. They drew with Kalamunda and Rockingham and suffered annoying and unnecessary close losses to University and ARKs, but finished off the season with a thumping 27-7 win over Associates that deprived that team of the first grade minor premiership. With an ounce of luck they could reasonably have finished the season in fifth place, but on the positive side, this young team is only going to get better and should look to reverse those close games in 2003. 8th in competition. Points for: 318 Points against: 473
SECOND GRADE Coach: Barry Guzder Manager: Graham Whitney An uncharacteristically poor year for Perth-Bayswater seconds, although lack of depth at the top end of the player spectrum continued to be a problem. They won one and drew one in the first round, and three of the losses were close. The second round was virtually a mirror image of the first. 9th in competition. Points for - 206 Points against - 445
THIRD GRADE Coach: Darrell Taylor Manager: Michele Mathews Thirds recovered some depth for the 2002 season and under Coach Darrell Taylor forged the most successful team record for the club this season. They had an indifferent first half with five wins from nine games, but stormed up the competition table in the second round, winning the final eight games of the season to finish second. They lost the major semi to Nedlands and finished their season with a close loss to Wests in the preliminary final, but deserve congratulations for a successful year. 2nd in competition Points for - 467 Points against - 228
FIFTH GRADE Coaches: Steve Fink and Noel Spittal Manager: Mr Nobody Another great year from the legends of Filthy Fifths, although from inauspicious beginnings. The team came close to folding early in the season, forfeiting the first game, but the troops rallied round and the team limped through the first round with only one win to its name. The second round was a different story, possibly due to the appointment of Wayne "Japie" Campbell as captain, and more believably because of the return of some former ace players such as team star Dwayne the Train Barr, the Kingaroy Express. The team then resumed its customary position as a feared and admired rugby machine and went through the second round with only two losses, stealing into the finals in fourth place. They squeaked through the minor semi 5-0 over Cottesloe but narrowly lost the preliminary final to eventual premiers Wests 29-25. 4th in competition Points for - 329 Points against - 262
COLTS Coach: Wally Murphy Manager: Jim Coyle A welcome return to the club for the colts grade under the steady hand of Wally Murphy. Much of the team still qualified for Under 17 but they enjoyed some notable successes, winning six games and drawing one to finish a creditable ninth in a thirteen-team competition. The team should be much the same next year and achieve considerably better results. 9th from 13 in competition Points for - 199 Points against - 336
