Coming to Perth, Western Australia? Whether it's for a season of rugby or just a holiday, you will love this big, open, clean, friendly city a thousand miles from anywhere, stuck on the edge of the Australian continent between the Great Victoria Desert and the Indian Ocean.

Perth metropolitan area, more or less

A city of one million people, Perth was established in 1829 by British settlers, centreing on the Swan River where the central business district remains to this day. The port of Fremantle, at the mouth of the Swan river and now part of metropolitan Perth, was the scene of the America's Cup races in 1986.

The western coastline is packed full of beaches -- glistening white sand, sparkling blue ocean, rolling surf, all the usual stuff you expect in a tropical paradise. The weather is hot in the summer (a couple of summer days over 40 degrees celcius last summer, for instance) and any rain seen between November and April may in fact turn out to be the next-door neighbour's overactive sprinkler system. The winters are mild -- I have yet to see a frost in Perth after twelve years. The locals think it's bloody freezing, but what would they know.
