Round 5 of FMG Premiership rugby saw our Premier & Reserve Grade teams on a bye, so the attention instead turned solely on our Colts, Ladies & Third Grade teams to fly the flag for the club.
Colts is where we will start, taking centre stage at home against Mandurah pirates. The game was a very physical battle, with Perth Bayswater coming out on top 34-14. The first half saw a few mistakes from both teams, but the boys were determined to get their season off the ground, with a strong set piece giving the backs a solid platform to work off. The second half was far more open, with big winger Devontay providing some huge carries and earning himself a man of the match performance. The team ran in six tries in total with Zsen, Jonathan, Gaine, Mekhi and Timoti (2), all crossing the line. Congratulations on the win guys, watching you sing the song in the sheds after the game sent a shiver down the spine, and displayed how much the win meant and the pride you have in the jersey. I get the feeling that it is only up from here as they set their sights on top of the table neddies in Round 6. playing at home with top billing and a large crowd to cheer the boys on.
Moving to our Ladies, Round saw us travel to Palmyra. Due to various injuries our team consisted of only thirteen players, which included three debutants: welcome to the team Ofa, Tara and Alicia. It would also be remiss not to give a special mention to club Head Trainer Jaymee Park for helping us out and scoring a try! The game started well with a quick try from our captain Bridget, and we continued to hold our own throughout the game. It was a try for try affair until the extreme heat, small bench, and a lack of shade that finally saw Palmyra score in the final minutes to snatch the win. The final score was Palmyra 32, Perth Bayswater 24. A special mention also goes to our lady of the match and debutant Ofa Siale Dutack. We’d also like to thank the Reserve Grade boys, who helped us ran water, set up our tent, and run the line for the game – a perfect example of our One Club goal in action. Finally, thank-you to the parents and friends who came down and supported us this week.We look forward now to a Round 6 double header against UWA and Wanneroo at McGillivray Sports Park. Kick off 1.45pm. Peace Out Baysie Ladies (look out for the Pink Crocs🐊 & TikToks)
In our final match for the round Third Grade took on Curtin University at Curtin. In what was a tightly fought contest for most of the game it was really anybody’s to win at Perth Bayswater 20, Curtin 10 with 10 minutes to play. But it was our boys that were able to take control of the game late, when it really mattered and ice it with a couple of late tries. Final score was Perth Bayswater 32, Curtin University 10. That now sets-up a mouth-watering top of the table clash in Round 6 with Nedlands Rugby Club at Sir Charles Court Reserve. There is currently only 2 points between the two sides, and a big win away from home to move into the top spot would be massive endorsement of our chances this year. If you’re not doing anything Saturday get down there for a 12:45pm kick-off and cheer them on!
